Hey everyone,
As the director of Xstyle this past unicon, we ran into the issue of too many ties that seriously hindered the competition. I think to mitigate this issue, there should be a requirement to have either an odd number of judges or odd number of pair judges.

The proposal sounds very easy to implement and if it really solves the problem, it sounds like a reasonable and simple measure.
In principle, however, ties can have various causes - the proposal would be particularly effective if it often happens that half of the judges place a rider in one position and the other half place the rider in another position and this is exactly swapped for another rider. I haven't done the evaluation of X-Style at a competition for some time now, so I can't judge whether this was really the cause of the many ties - but I think you analyzed the results of the Unicon in this respect?

The ties showed up multiple times in a tie breaker round where the where only 2 riders so yes.

Okay, in tie breaker rounds with only two participants it is of course obvious.
From my point of view, there is nothing to be said against prescribing an uneven number of judges/judging pairs in the rulebook.

Yes this was based on my analyzing all the results and looking at all of the judging sheets. The tie breaks happened not just when it was down to two riders, but also during the prelim rounds. Luckily most of the ties were in the lower half so they didn’t need to be broken as they were not moving on anyway. I did note when I posted all results who ended up tying in their rounds. There was a tie that happened for 3rd in one of the prelim rounds, and I just had them both move on because the semifinal groups were only 6 riders and the max is 10.
I think we need to have some language in there requiring an odd number when it is two riders, and if not requiring strongly suggesting an odd number for the other groups as well.
