Error in calculation of Total Score

Hello everyone,

the new Rule 6C.5 Scoring says that the Total Score has to be calculated as follows:

Total Score = (Performance Score * 0.45 / 30 + Technical Score * 0.45 / 30 + Dismount Score * 0.1 / 10) * 100

The formula therefore clearly assumes that the Performance Score and the Technical Score can each be a maximum of 30 points, so that the Total Score can be a maximum of 100 points. However, the assumption that the Performance Score and the Technical Score can be a maximum of 30 points is incorrect, because the Rulebook states in Rules 6D.2 Technical Score and 6D.3 Performance Score that each of the three 10 point subcategories is weighted at 33.33...%. This means, however, that the Performance Score or Technical Score ultimately assigned by each judge can only be a maximum of 10 points. In the formula for the Total Score, we would therefore actually have to divide by 10, not 30, if we want to normalize to a maximum value of 100.

Or have I overlooked something?

Thank you Jan for finding this.

Jan, Marvin and me met over the weekend and were able to discuss this in person. Here is the gist:

  • With the recent proposal about scoring there is an inconsistency in the rulebook - New: 6C.5 vs Old: 6D.2 and 6D.3 (find them below)
  • That is for people implementing software for scoring, this is a clear error and calculating results is locked
  • With our proposal we clearly forget to make the change everywhere

The result:

We brought up the proposal for integrity and clarity and want to move forward with that decision. To align with the intent, we need to make a follow-up change to restore consistency.

Meaning, we also need to change the weighted percentages from 33.33% to 100%. See it here in detail (I marked the change bold)

OLD:

6D.2 Technical Score

The Technical part of the judging is broken into three subcategories. These subcategories are weighted as follows:

Quantity of Unicycling Skills And Transitions 33.33...%
Mastery And Quality of Execution 33.33...%
Diculty And Duration 33.33...%

6D.3 Performance Score

The Performance part of the judging is broken into three subcategories. These subcategories are weighted as follows:

Presence/Execution 33.33...%
Composition/Choreography 33.33...%
Interpretation of the Music/Timing 33.33...%

NEW:

6D.2 Technical Score

The Technical part of the judging is broken into three subcategories. These subcategories are weighted as follows:

Quantity of Unicycling Skills And Transitions 100%
Mastery And Quality of Execution 100%
Diculty And Duration 100%

6D.3 Performance Score

The Performance part of the judging is broken into three subcategories. These subcategories are weighted as follows:

Presence/Execution 100%
Composition/Choreography 100%
Interpretation of the Music/Timing 100%

---

I'm not sure about the process here (if there is any), but would be fine to have that part done as amendment during editing (to comply with the consistency of the voted proposal).

Thank you again for the offline discussion on this—I think it should be possible to find a way to make the rule consistent throughout the editorial process.

Personally, however, I wouldn’t express the weighting as a percentage, but simply as a factor—the percentage seems a bit counterintuitive to me when the total doesn’t add up to 100%. I would therefore phrase it as follows:

6D.2 Technical Score

The Technical part of the judging is broken into three subcategories. These subcategories are weighted by a factor as follows:

Quantity of Unicycling Skills And Transitions - factor: 1
Mastery And Quality of Execution - factor: 1
Diculty And Duration - factor: 1

6D.3 Performance Score

The Performance part of the judging is broken into three subcategories. These subcategories are weighted by a factor as follows:

Presence/Execution - factor: 1
Composition/Choreography - factor: 1
Interpretation of the Music/Timing - factor: 1

We also did not updated rule 6E.3.1 Announcing Of Results... It says:

"[...] Results Sheets show a summary of the overall results for each category. The summary includes the percentage each competitor received out of a total 100% (all competitors together) for Performance, Technical, and Overall, along with the number of major and minor falls from the Dismount category. Judge scores will never be shared. A sample Result Sheet can be found here."

I think we should adjust that to the following:

"[...] Results Sheets show a tabulated results as described in 6C.5 Scoring. The results include the Performance Score, Technical Score, Dismount Score and Total Score. Judge scores will never be shared. A sample Result Sheet can be found here."

And of course the sample Result Sheet needs to be updated.
