Since the other discussion was essentially unanimous on the terms competition and event, but not on the term “contest”, I have split up the proposal for the introduction of the new definitions once again so that the proposal is not rejected because of a single term.

I still consider the term contest to be suitable for describing what we want to define in the Rulebook.

My proposal would therefore still be as follows:

Contest: A dedicated division within an event that covers certain ages and genders. A contest aims to directly compare the performance of riders/teams to form a ranking and determine the best rider/team.

Attempt: A single performance or effort by an athlete during a contest aimed at achieving a specific result. Each attempt is scored according to defined rules and contributes to the athlete's overall score in the contest. Depending on the event, only one attempt per contest may be possible or several. Events may define more specific terms for an attempt as appropriate such as match, routine, start, run, battle, etc.

Please give feedback on whether you would agree or disagree with the proposal and which term you would agree with.

Comment

It would be good to give examples of contests, like 100m 24" wheel Female 30-39, Basketball Youth, Freestyle Pairs 17-18.

Comment

Thanks for that remark, I have added exampels of contests.

Are there any further comments on this proposal? If not, I would put it to the vote.

Comment

Contest is a synonym to competition and it is highly dangerous to define these two terms with different things.

Ian used the word "category" in other discussions which is for more favorable. Can even be evaluation/assessment/judgment category to make it more explicit.

Category: competition + group + gender

with

  • competition: defined in the other proposal, I refer to it as 100m, Individual Artistic Freestyle, Cross-Country
  • group: agegroup or class
  • gender: will be defined by another committee, to my current knowledge: female and open/male

Example: Athletes sign up to compete in 100m and will be compared to other competitors assigned into the same category to determine a winner.
