What happens when the ball hits the ceiling? I think play should be interrupted. We can add this to the following rule.

I'm not sure, where the free shot should be? Below the location where the ball touched the ceiling? Or in from the side line?

If we are changing this rule anyway, we could also add a sentence that if it's unclear, a face-off shall be awarded. But that may not be necessary and already clear with the current rules although not explicitely written.

14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Bounds

If the ball leaves the field, touches the ceiling, or touches and objects above the field, the game is interrupted immediately (even if the ball comes back in). The team opposite to that of the player who last touched it gets a free shot. The free shot is done 2.0 m in from the side line.

In general I agree (Why we haven`t discussed this matter years ago?), a simple and usefull addition. I understand that the ceiling is as well an object above the field. Probably "If the ball leaves the field or touches an object above the field, the game is ..." would be enough.

Comment

yes, we should add that.

"...or touches the ceiling or another object above the field..."

Comment

I agree but maybe we need a sentence for the ceiling like this.

14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Bounds

If the ball leaves the field, touches the ceiling, or touches and objects above the field, the game is interrupted immediately (even if the ball comes back in). The team opposite to that of the player who last touched it gets a free shot. The free shot is done 2.0 m in from the side line exceptd the ball touches the ceiling it schould be taken below this point.

Nicolai please make a proposal.

Comment

Does it make sense that we have "The free shot is done 2.0m in from the side line." in 14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Bounds?

If the free shot is within the attacking zone it is a goalie ball/corner. A goalie ball is not 2 m from the sideline. A corner is 2 m from one sideline but not the other.

14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Bounds does not say anything about moving the free shot to a corner/goalie ball, you have to read the free shot rule to know this. However, 14B.9.1 Free Shot says "The free shot is the standard penalty for all violations of the rules." Which I don't believe a ball out of bounds is a violation of the rules.

I think someone could interpret 14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Bounds and 14B.9.1 Free Shot to collectively indicate that when the ball goes out of play, the ball should always be played 2 m from the sideline.

Should the free shot be altered slightly to say that it is also used for ball out of bounds. And should the "The free shot is done 2.0 m in from the side line" be removed from the ball out of bounds?

Old
14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Bounds

If the ball leaves the field, the game is interrupted immediately (even if the ball comes
back in). The team opposite to that of the player who last touched it gets a free shot.
The free shot is done 1.0m in from the side line.

Old
14B.9.1 Free Shot
The free shot is the standard penalty for all violations of the rules. It is applied in all
cases except for those explicitly mentioned in sections 14B.9.2-14B.9.4. The free shot is
executed from the point where the violation was done. Exceptions: If a team receives a
free shot within the opponents' goal area, the free shot is executed at the closest corner
mark (corner shot). If a team receives a free shot within their own goal area, the free
shot is taken at a distance of 1m in front of the goal line (goalkeeper's ball). In the
instance that a delay of game penalty is given, the penalty will be taken from the center
mark.

Would it make more sense to have

New
14B.9.1 Free Shot
The free shot is the standard penalty for all violations of the rules, and where a ball leaves the playing field. It is applied in all
cases except for those explicitly mentioned in sections 14B.9.2-14B.9.4. For penalty violations, the free shot is
executed from the point where the violation was done. If the ball is ruled out of bounds, the free shot is taken from the point where the ball was judged to have left the field, 2 m in from the sidelines, or below the point that it contacted an object above the field. Exceptions: If a team receives a
free shot within the opponents' goal area, the free shot is executed at the closest corner
mark (corner shot). If a team receives a free shot within their own goal area, the free
shot is taken at a distance of 2m in front of the goal line (goalkeeper's ball). In the
instance that a delay of game penalty is given, the penalty will be taken from the center
mark.

New
14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Bounds

If the ball leaves the field, or touches an object above the field, the game is interrupted immediately, regardless of whether the ball returns to play. The team opposite to that of the player who last touched it gets a free shot. The free shot is done 2.0 m in from the side line

Comment

Ball Out Of Bounds is a violation of the rule 14D.3.1 Dimensions. Therefore is a need to change or adjust this rule first.

old: "The field has a length of 35 to 45 meters and a breadth of 20 to 25 meters. It is surrounded by barriers. The corners are rounded or beveled."

new: "The field has a length of 35 to 45 meters and a breadth of 20 to 25 meters. A ceiling or objects hanging from are not part of the field. The It is surrounded by barriers. The corners are rounded or beveled."

Comment: If a ball hits the ceiling or ... it is outside the deminsions of the playing field.

Old 14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Bounds: "If the ball leaves the field, the game is interrupted immediately (even if the ball comes back in). The team opposite to that of the player who last touched it gets a free shot. The free shot is done 1.0m in from the side line."

New 14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Demensions Of The Field: "If the ball leaves the field, the game is interrupted immediately (even if the ball comes back in). The team opposite to that of the player who last touched it gets a free shot. The free shot is done 1.0m in from the side line. (For execution see 14B.9 Penalties and 14B.9.1 Free Shot)"

Comment

I agree with your suggestion steven. I think this will make all clear how to execute the free shot and what means out of bound. In my opinion you can bring this to a proposal.

Comment

I believe your wording was in addition to the wording I proposed, Herbie? Not instead of?
I have reworded. The addition to the Dimensions rule "Any surface outside of, or above the barriers, is not considered in the field. " only removes the words ", or touches an object above the field" from the 14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Bounds rule. So doesn't add anything in efficiency, perhaps is still more straight forward to some?

14D.3.1 Dimensions
The field has a length of 35 to 45 meters and a breadth of 20 to 25 meters. It is surrounded by barriers. The corners are rounded or beveled. Any surface outside of, or above the barriers, is not considered in the field.

14B.5.7 Ball Out Of Bounds:

If the ball leaves the field, the game is interrupted immediately (even if the ball comes back in). The team opposite to that of the player who last touched it gets a free shot. (For execution see 14B.9 Penalties and 14B.9.1 Free Shot)

I think "Ball Out Of Demensions Of The Field" is too literal. The wording is correct, but I don't think it would be used in english.

Comment

Fine, I would agree.

Thank you all for your comments and particularly to Steven for moving so quickly to a proposal! Looks all good from my side.
