2B.1.2 Adjustment of Minimum Crank Lengths

Hallo together,

Another rule that has remained unchanged since 1998 concerns the minimum permitted crank length. I propose adjusting these limits as follows:

  • Reduce the minimum crank length for 24-inch wheels to 100 mm

  • Reduce the minimum crank length for wheels under 20 inches to 89 mm

Through personal testing, I have found that a 24-inch wheel rides best with 100-mm cranks. The currently prescribed 125-mm cranks feel very unstable on this wheel and make smooth riding more difficult.

Advantages of shorter crank lengths:

  • Higher speeds: Shorter cranks allow for higher speeds and could make races more exciting.

  • Improved riding experience: The wheel runs much more smoothly, leading to a more comfortable and safer ride.

  • Low financial effort: Switching to shorter cranks is comparatively inexpensive and can usually be implemented with little effort.

Potential disadvantages:

  • Adjustment period: Riders who are accustomed to the current crank length standards would need some time to adapt.

  • Comparability of records: As with a change in wheel size, historical best times might become harder to compare.

With this discussion, I would like to invite you to actively contribute to the further development of our sport's regulations. The goal is to create a solid basis to officially implement this change.

I am very curious about your opinions:

  • Do you support the proposed changes to the minimum crank lengths? Why or why not?

  • What personal experiences have you had with different crank lengths?

  • Are there any additional advantages or disadvantages that have not yet been mentioned?

I look forward to your thoughts and a lively discussion on this important topic!
